Stevie Nicks just dropped her first single in 9 years
Stevie Nicks just dropped her first single in nine years, and it might be her timeliest song yet. The music legend released “Show Them the Way” on Oct. 9.
Although the song is new to the world, the singer actually wrote it more than a decade ago. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nicks revealed that the song came to her in a dream in 2008 when she had been watching civil rights documentaries on television.
She dreamed she was performing at a political benefit with some rather significant attendees, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, John Lewis, John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy.
“This dream was so really real that there was a little bit of me, for a minute, when I sat up was like, ‘Did that just really happen?'” Nicks told Rolling Stone.
“So I wrote it down just in prose. I didn’t write it down in a seven verse poem. I wrote down what had happened.”
There are two versions of the song. One is a raw, piano-only version. The other, which you can hear in this official music video posted to YouTube, is a full-band recording that features Dave Grohl on drums.
The singer’s late mother is also mentioned in the song as a shadow who reminds her, “Don’t forget what we were fighting for.” It was a phrase that Nicks’s mother had repeated to her throughout her life.
Nicks considered releasing the song as part of her 2011 album, “In Your Dreams,” but didn’t feel it was a good fit.
“I think the world is calling for it right now,” she told Rolling Stone.
“This song really is a prayer,” Nicks told Associated Press. “This song is a prayer for people to unite. A prayer for people to get together.”
All proceeds from the record will benefit MusiCares, an organization that assists musicians and others in the music community who are in need.
