Subway’s new protein bowls are everything you love about Footlongs, minus the carbs

If you’re following a keto diet or are simply trying to eliminate some carbs from your meals, Subway’s latest menu addition is made just for you.

The restaurant chain’s new protein bowls include everything you’d get in a footlong sandwich, just without the bread, and therefore with fewer carbs. All footlongs, with the exception of the Veggie Delight sandwich, can be made into a bowl that includes the same portion of protein, vegetables, cheese and sauce.

Subway is also now offering a $2 double protein upgrade on the protein bowls or footlongs.

Just some of the options for the protein bowls include Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, Chicken and Bacon, Spicy Italian and Meatball Marinara. Protein bowls can be ordered in-restaurant, through the Subway app or online for contactless curbside pick-up at participating restaurants.

While the new bowls resemble a salad, which Subway also has on the menu, protein bowls appear to have about twice the meat — just like a footlong versus a six-inch sub.

There are other ways to get low-carb sammie options from chains near you. Jimmy John’s lets customers order any sandwich as an “unwich,” which means you’ll get your order wrapped in lettuce instead of bread. All of Jimmy John’s unwich wraps contain 10 or fewer carbs.

Of course, you can also make your own low-carb wrap, sandwich or bowl at home.

You can find a variety of wraps and breads that are either low-carb or keto, such as low-carb cheese wraps and jicama wraps at Trader Joe’s, and a new keto-friendly bread from Carbonaut is hitting Target and Sprouts stores this month.

If you want to stick with not buying wraps or bread, these low-carb reuben wraps are wrapped in lettuce and pickle subs use pickles in place of the bread, serving as an alternative to your favorite sandwich.
