Your Summer Needs These Watermelon Ice Cubes
Watermelon is inarguably the summeriest fruit that exists. Nothing compares to the sweet satisfaction of chomping down on an icy-cold slice at a picnic or BBQ, and how could anyone forget the seed-spitting contests of yesteryear?
Well, now there’s a whole new way to enjoy your fave melon: in ice cube form. Not only does it keep your drink cold without watering it down, it adds a delicious sweetness and depth of flavor without hardly any added calories. Score.
There are two ways to make watermelon ice cubes, depending on how much time you’d like to spend.
- Simply slice your watermelon into small, ice-cube shaped squares, place on a baking sheet and freeze until solid.
- Remove seeds and puree the watermelon flesh and then pour it into a silicone ice cube mold and freeze. Bonus points if you use a shaped mold (hint: try using stars for a red, white and blue party punch).
From there, the sky’s the limit: add it to plain seltzer water or use it to spice up a gin and tonic (a slice or two of muddled cucumber would not be remiss there).
