‘Supermarket Sweep’ may be coming back to TV

The ’90s offered us some pretty epic TV programming.

From drama-filled talk shows like “Ricki Lake” and “Leeza” to classic sitcoms like “Roseanne” and “Seinfeld” to addictive dramas like “The X-Files” and “ER”—the ’90s kind of had it all. Another TV highlight of the decade? Game shows. One of the most beloved in this genre was “Supermarket Sweep.” And now, we’ve gotten word that the popular show may be making a comeback.

If you’re not familiar with the famous competition show, here’s a refresher: “Supermarket Sweep” originally premiered in the 1960s on ABC and was revived two separate times—on Lifetime from 1990 to 1995 and on PAX (now Ion Television) from 2000 to 2003.

While the rules changed a bit with each new iteration of the show, all three versions had one thing common: contestants competing in timed races through a grocery store to guess retail prices or fill up their carts with items that would add up to the biggest bill. The show also incorporated elements like pop culture trivia and puzzles.

Here’s an episode of the show from 1994 to jog your memory:

Now, production company FreemantleMedia has announced that they have acquired the rights to the show’s format with the intention to bring it back yet again.

‘The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favourite gameshow which has travelled with such success over the years. Now, modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st century audience,” FreemantleMedia executive Vasha Wallace said in a statement. “It is a great addition to this year’s MIPCOM slate and given the interest we’ve had already we’re confident that everyone will be as excited for its return as we are.”

Can anyone else remember going into the grocery store when you were younger and being disappointed that it was NOTHING like what you saw on TV? Kids (and adults) all over the country had to be looking around the store wondering why everyone isn’t running up and down the aisle and cheering.

This announcement does not yet mean that the show will definitely be resurrected, but hey, we can hope.

People are already ecstatic at the mere possibility of the show coming back to TV.

One Twitter user even believes the show’s return is all about “divine intervention.”
