‘Supermarket Sweep’ Episodes Are Now Available On Netflix

Attention, shoppers!

During times of stress, many of us seek out the things that remind us comfortingly of our childhoods. Luckily for ’90s kids, there is an abundance of nostalgic food and entertainment options currently available to soothe their anxious souls.

In the snacks category, ’90s kids can exult in the return of Dunkaroos, along with new flavors of SunnyD and Fruit by the Foot, and Gushers-style fruit bites, Juicefuls. As for entertainment, ’90s throwbacks and reboots abound on Netflix these days, including a new TV series based on the “Babysitters Club” books, a reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries” and now, the return of “Supermarket Sweep” episodes from the early 1990s.

Yes, the old game show that made grocery shopping into a competition is available to binge-watch on Netflix. At the moment, there are 15 episodes available, and each episode is only 21 minutes long (because commercials, remember those?), which is just enough to satisfy all your cravings for pleated khakis and floral-print blazers.

Netflix tweeted on July 6 that they “don’t know who needs to hear this, but 15 episodes of the iconic Supermarket Sweep are now on Netflix in the US.”

“Supermarket Sweep” somehow turned the tedious chore of grocery shopping into an exciting game in which contestants jockeyed to win groceries-related competitions, like racing around the supermarket on a timed scavenger hunt for specific foodstuffs.

The origins of the game show date back to the ’60s, when the show aired on ABC from 1965 to 1967. It was revived on Lifetime from 1990 to 1995, and then again on PAX TV from 2000 to 2003. The Netflix episodes are from the early-’90s Lifetime era.

In August 2019, we learned that Leslie Jones would host a reboot of the game show, though production on the new series may have been sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking of “Supermarket Sweep” and the funny ladies of “Saturday Night Live” … while there is no trailer available online for “Supermarket Sweep,” there is a cut-for-time “SNL” spoof of the show that emphasizes the need for contestants on this zany shopping competition to “go into it with a plan,” like Melissa McCarthy’s character, Padget.
