This absurd 30-day vacation lets you take a trip to Mars without ever actually leaving Earth

If the thought of heading to the beach or to Walt Disney World leaves you feeling underwhelmed, how about a trip to Mars?

Well, kind of.  TripAdvisor is offering an out-of-this-world experience for anyone who has always wanted to explore another planet. No, you won’t be storming Area 51 or even leaving the planet — the trip from interplanetary agency Astroland takes participants deep into the caves of northern Spain so they can get a taste of what life on the Red Planet might be like.

The one-of-a-kind experience lasts a whopping 30 days, including a three-week training program and another three days of physical and psychological training at the Astroland facilities. It all leads up to three days of total seclusion in the cave. Once inside, participants will have the basic necessities for survival while they test what human life would be like on Mars.

There are only five expeditions available in the coming months and a max of 10 people per expedition, so astronaut-aspirers looking to take part in the next mission should book quickly — and be prepared to drop some serious cash. The total for the 30-day trip is $6,862.16.

You must pass physical and psychological tests before being allowed to participate in the experience and special equipment has to be worn. No contact is allowed with the outside world. Upcoming mission start dates are: Sept. 22, Oct. 13, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Nov. 24.

Aside from fulfilling a childhood dream of being an astronaut, TripAdvisor says the goal of the mission is to learn more about not just the physical, but also the societal impact living in such a colony would have.

During training, the chosen team will have direct online access to aerospace experts and psychologists and will learn how to carry out spacewalks by participating in speleology (caving) training and natural buoyancy tests that simulate the states of weightlessness.

The cave itself is located in Arredondo, Spain, and measures 60 meters tall and around 1.2 kilometers long. It is believed to accurately replicate the hostile conditions of Mars.

If you’re thinking about signing up, it’s important to note it’s not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with back problems, heart issues or other medical conditions. Travelers also should have a moderate physical fitness level.
