This Teacher Has A Personalized Handshake With Each Of His Students
Now, that's some awesome teacher-student bonding right there.
This teacher starts each and everyday off in a very unique way. And no, I’m not talking about with a Daily Oral Language (DOL) assignment, either. Oh no! His way of getting his fifth grade class prepped for the day involves a handshake with every single student.
But, I don’t mean just a simple high five here. The teacher, Barry White Jr., has taken the time to create unique, individualized handshakes with each of his pupils. Before they enter the classroom each morning, he performs these hand motions with them, one by one.
By the time they’ve crossed the threshold into their Charlotte, North Carolina, classroom in the morning, they’ve already had a little bit of a personalized experience with the teacher. Not to mention, it must really get them excited for the day of learning ahead.
“They know when they get to the front door we do our ‘good mornings,’ and then it’s time to go,” White told ABC News. “I’m always pumped up and then we start doing the moves, and that brings them excitement and pumps them up for a high-energy class.”
Because there’s nothing like a little hand-clapping and movement to get you going in the morning! Especially when you’re that age. Plus, it’s nice for a student to get to feel a sense of “team,” a special bond they have with their teacher and the rest of the class.
According to ABC News, White got the idea after watching his favorite basketball team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“You see that bond and how close they are,” he said. “I wanted to bring that feeling into the entire 5th grade.”
He wants them to know that they can trust him, as a teammate, as a teacher. “The most critical component is the relationship, the rapport you build with your students because sometimes it can go underrated or overlooked,” White told 13 WMAZ. “Before I’m able to deliver a substantial amount of content to them, they have to invest in the teacher.”
