There’s no doubt that Chewbacca is one of the most beloved characters from the “Star Wars” franchise. The Fort Worth, Texas, police department decided to capitalize on the hairy Wookie’s enduring popularity by giving him a starring role in their recruiting video.
The video starts off with members of the department doing roll call and assignments for the day, when a police officer named Jimmy learns that he’ll be working with the Wookie.
“Excuse me, did you say the rookie?” he asks.
“No, the Wookie,” the officer in charge replies.
Jimmy gets his first look at what he’s in for as he glances over at Chewbacca now sitting next to him.
At a routine traffic stop, Chewbacca becomes angry when a woman cannot understand his signature grunts, and he starts shaking her car, much to her horror! At training practice at the gym, Chewbacca faces off with another recruit, easily snapping his arm off in one fell swoop. Chewbacca can be heard singing in the shower in the police locker room, and when he exits in a towel, Officer Jimmy asks him, “You going to clean out your hair??”
When they take a break in the lunch room, Officer Jimmy says to Chewbacca, “Hey, I’m sorry about Han. Do you want to talk about it?”
The answer is decidedly no, as Chewbacca slams the table and angrily stalks away.
The video ends with a scroll of script on the screen, modeled after the opening of the “Star Wars” movies. It reads: “Attention Wookies! Attention Rookies! Welcome to the Fort Worth Police Department! Remember to always show courtesy and respect to our citizens and always provide professional service. And may the force by with you!”
The video has now been shared more than 23,000 times on Facebook, and people are chiming in to express their support.
“Thank you Ft. Worth PD for letting your officers and staff experience fun. You set the bar of what other departments need to reach. Your morale with them goes along way!!!” read one comment.
“The Fort Worth police department has to be one of the most respected departments around right now. Makes me proud to call Fort Worth my hometown,” read another.
May the force be with all of the department’s new recruits!
