These ’90s-inspired Igloo coolers are adorably retro

With lockdown restrictions gradually easing across the country, we’re all taking advantage of any permissible opportunities to meet with family and friends outside our immediate household. As things stand, it could be a while before our favorite cafes, restaurants and bars open back up for business. And when they do, social distancing measures might make it difficult to get a table…

So the next best thing is to pack a cooler with a homemade feast and head somewhere for a picnic. To inspire you, there are some pretty awesome coolers on the market – in a range of colors guaranteed to take your al fresco dining from basic to brilliant.

Igloo has just re-released a set of gloriously ’90s retro-style picnic coolers that will certainly make your summer more chill. You’re going to want to get yourself one of these just for the nostalgia value! The iconic blue, pink, and yellow coolers are being offered in the same size, color, and style as the originals. They are available at Urban Outfitters and Igloo’s site.

“When we decided to re-release the Picnic Cooler we thought the only way to do it was to stay true to our roots and relaunch with the same colors, on the same machines, and in the same factory in Katy, Texas,” said Brad Blankinship, vice president of marketing at Igloo. “Additionally, selling at Urban Outfitters allows us to bridge the gap of generations — those who shop there will be able to take a trip back down memory lane and purchase a cooler many of them likely took on road trips with their families when they were kids.”

First up is the gloriously ’90s retro-style Igloo Picnic Cooler, a two-handled container that holds 25 quarts. It has plenty of room for all your snacks and cold beverages. This cooler is currently on sale at the Igloo site for $49.99 (off a regular price of $67).

Igloo’s Throwback Collection also features a half-gallon water jug ($18) – perfect for washing down all those sandwiches. It’s sold out at the Igloo site but you can still get it at Urban Outfitters.

If you’re packing a picnic for one, the last item in the collection is a 4-quart Playmate mini-cooler.

But, if you’re not tied to the teal, pink and yellow theme, you can actually get these products in different colors. This red mini-cooler with a cool checkerboard-patterned lid ($29.99) is available at retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Urban Outfitters, though it’s a bit more expensive there.

The 25-quart picnic cooler comes in other retro-style shades too. This sunny yellow cooler with a pink lid and green handles is the epitome of kitsch and is available for $36 at Target.

There’s also a cute mint version featuring two baby blue shades. And the red, white and blue model is ideal for (socially distanced) Fourth of July parties. Both of these are $36 at Target.

If you’re more interested in durability and functionality than anything, our Don’t Waste Your Money product review team found this Coleman FlipLid personal cooler to be the best overall and the best value in our best small hard cooler product testing. You can get it in red or blue on Amazon for under $14.

Depending on your state’s travel restrictions during the COVID-19 outbreak, you might not be able to venture too far this summer. But even if you’re confined to your backyard for a picnic, one of these coolers will definitely add some colorful fun to the experience!
