10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Precious Moments Figurines

The products and services mentioned below were selected independent of sales and advertising. However, Simplemost may receive a small commission from the purchase of any products or services through an affiliate link to the retailer's website.

The teardrop-eyed Precious Moments dolls, first introduced to the world in the 1970s, has since evolved into a popular collector’s item and classic gift-giving piece. From figurines to ornaments and more, Precious Moments has been a growing brand for more than three decades.

Here are 10 fun facts that you may not have known about the Missouri company:

1. Only One of The ‘Original 21’ Figurines Is Still Available

When creator Sam Butcher first created the 3D figurines that would be the beginning of the Precious Moments industry, he started with his first collection, titled “The Original 21.” Now that the company has grown, they’re currently only selling one of those figures on their website: Love One Another.

2. You Can Get The Other 20 — But It’ll Cost You

If you’re an avid Precious Moments collector, having all 21 of The Original 21 figurines may be something you’re interested in. Make that a reality by purchasing the other 20 on this retired Precious Moments website, which sells the dolls at a pricier cost.

3. The Most Expensive Figurine Is ‘God Loveth A Cheerful Giver’

The most expensive doll on their site, God Loveth a Cheerful Giver, is on sale for $299.99. (Compare it to Jesus Loves Me, which is currently retailing on their site as the least expensive, at $25.)

4. The Marking On The Bottom Of Each Figurine Isn’t A Coincidence

Starting in 1981, each figurine produced came with a special marking on the bottom, symbolizing a special edition doll and/or what year the doll was produced in. A full list of the markings and what they mean can be found here.

5. There’s A Precious Moments Park And Chapel In Missouri

Heavily inspired by The Sistine Chapel in Rome, a Precious Moments Park and Chapel was opened in 1989, with dozens of murals all hand-painted by Butcher himself.

The art is inspired by and depicts various stories of the Bible — the Old Testament is displayed on its east side, and the New Testament is on the west side. Here’s a look at it from the site’s Facebook page.

6. Over 2,500 Figurines Have Been Made

There have been over 2,500 figurines made, according to an answer on the website’s FAQ section. Understandable, since the figurine line has produced everything from ornaments to cake toppers.

7. New Collections Are Created 4 Times A Year

According to the site’s FAQ section, Precious Moments launches 25-40 figurines in a collection, and does so four times a year. However, figurines also get retired yearly, meaning they will never make that figurine again. They’ve done, for example, a limited edition Disney Showcase Collection.

8. A Missouri Woman’s 2000-Piece Collection Was Donated To A Cancer Organization After Her Death

In 2013, a man donated his late mother’s collection of Precious Moments figurines to a breast cancer organization in southwest Missouri. She had been collecting the dolls for 25 years. It is estimated that the collection she acquired was worth at least $100,000.

9. Precious Moments Made Animated, Seasonal TV Specials

The company made cartoon specials centering around Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter.

10. 2016 Marked 35 Years Of Precious Moments

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Precious Moments launched a figurine set specifically for members of its Collectors’ Club, titled Reflections of Blessings. Club membership includes access to new figurines, free doll personalization and more.
