New Type Of Seaweed Is Healthier Than Kale And Tastes Like Bacon

This weekend, instead of stocking up on old fashioned bacon, consider getting some seaweed that tastes like bacon. Wait, what? It’s not yet on the shelves at your local grocer, but it’s true.

Researchers at Oregon State have crafted a type of seaweed called dulse. When cooked and fried, it tastes like bacon.

And to add, it’s packed with protein, vitamins, nutrients and is claimed to be healthier than kale. The translucent-red lettuce looking food sells for up to $90 a pound when dried.

“Dulse is a super-food, with twice the nutritional value of kale,” Chuck Toombs, an OSU professor states. “And OSU had developed this variety that can be farmed, with the potential for a new industry for Oregon.”

According to TIME, OSU has received a grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture to explore the opportunities of farming and growing this new crop. Currently, they are growing about 20-30 pounds of the crop a week, but plan to triple production.

If this superfood hits the shelves, would you try it? Share your thoughts with us on our Facebook page.
