This pony bead pencil backpack tag is the perfect back-to-school craft

Michaels

Back-to-school time is obviously busy — but if you do manage to find some downtime in between buying school supplies and preparing that first school lunch, this craft is a great way to get some quality time with the kids before they’re off for another year of learning.

Michaels has everything you need to get started. From walking you through the materials and supply list to offering step-by-step instructions, you and your kids will have whipped up your very own pony bead pencil-shaped backpack tags in no time.

These backpack tags could be great tools for parents, teachers and kids alike. For parents, they’re a great way to have fun with the little ones. For kids, they’re perfect for telling backpacks apart at school. And teachers, too, may find this to be a fun activity for the entire class!

How It’s Done

OK, so here’s how they’re made. Start by gathering your materials. Luckily, there are only four items involved. You’ll need a pair of scissors, a package of pony beads, pony beads lacing and a package of alphabet beads with which to add a personalized touch. All of these items can be purchased through Michaels.

As an added bonus, there’s a 40% off sale going on at Michaels if you shop before Aug. 24. All online orders or orders made online and scheduled for in-store pickup are eligible. So be sure to take advantage of this chance to shop and save!

Once you’ve got everything you need, it’s time to get crafting! The process involves lacing three beads at a time, alternating the lace on the left-hand side and the lace on the right-hand side to create a weaving effect. You’ll need 48 inches of lacing per pencil, so keep that in mind when factoring in how much lacing to purchase.

By alternating colors, you’ll achieve the “pencil” look. You can stick with pink, black and yellow to create a classic pencil or get creative with the colors.

Find the full list of instructions and follow along with the step-by-step on the Michaels website. When you’re through, your kids will have a cute backpack tag that’s all the more special because they got to make it with you!

If you’re still in the crafting mood, be sure to check out this game you can make with the kids, which could make for an entertaining after-school activity, too.

For fun on the weekends, be sure to check out the free classes kids can participate in at Michaels.
