Thomas Rhett And His Wife Are Pregnant And Adopting A Baby From Africa

A pregnancy announcement is always extremely exciting, but I think it’s arguably that much more special when you get to announce that not only are you expecting, but you’re also in the process of adopting.

And that’s exactly what happened to country singer Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins. According to social media posts that went live on Feb. 15, the couple is pregnant AND ALSO in the process of adopting a child from Africa. Now, that is what I call a double whammy!

According to People magazine, the fact that they were pregnant with their own child came as a total, but exciting shock. It all started when his wife was feeling a little sick while they were vacationing in Tanzania.

“When we began the adoption process, we said, ‘Let’s wait, let’s give this adopted child his or her time with us and then we’ll continue our family,’” Akins told People. “So I was convinced it was food poisoning.”

And it definitely was not food poisoning! And even though Rhett had been the one to suggest she take the pregnancy test, even he could not believe it was true.

“I was in complete and utter shock!” the 26-year-old country star said. “No one is ever prepared for something like that. It is almost like we suddenly had twins.”

The Instagram photo Akins posted was captioned, “OH BABY! actually…BABIES! Our hearts are exploding with happiness for y’all to meet our new baby who we are bringing home from Africa soon who is also going to have a little brother or sister because, SURPRISE! there’s a sweet baby in my belly too.”

When the singer himself posted the photo he added, “Safe to say life is about to get crazy” to the sweet announcement.

This is definitely going to be a crazy adventure, but the couple—who married in 2012 after knowing each other since first grade—seems more than up for the challenge.

“I think the way it all worked out, both of us have such a peace about this whole process, that it’s so right,” Akins told People. “We could not be happier. We feel like 2017 is going to be our big year.”

That sounds about right!

On Feb. 19, the couple announced the gender of their baby through various Instagram posts. Akins first posted a picture of a cake captioned, “How we wonder what you are…”

Then a second Instagram was posted of the big reveal! Akins captioned the post, “Sorry our family is nuts BUT WE’RE HAVING A BABY GIRL!!!!”

And to top it all off, she posted a video of Thomas Rhett in a pink wig showing off his flowing pink locks, and we are so thankful. Captioned, “@thomasrhettakins is really excited about having a girl.”

We’re so excited for the happy couple and their baby girl!
