Meeting your daughter’s boyfriend is a pretty big deal, but this celebrity dad wasn’t nervous about it at all. In fact, he kind of forgot it was happening. Husband-and-wife country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill sat down with Jimmy Fallon and shared the hilarious story of how McGraw wound up meeting his daughter Gracie’s boyfriend. And he couldn’t have planned it better.
“I was on the road working,” the singer told the late-night host. “They gave me a call and they said, ‘You know, Gracie’s going out on a date. Do you mind if she goes before you meet the guy?'”
McGraw joked that he’d already had the Secret Service check out the young man and everything was fine for Gracie go on the date. But once McGraw was back in town the next day, he did want Gracie’s date to stop by just to meet him in person.
“Around noon, I want him to come by the house so I can say hi to him—look him in the eye,” he said.
Upon arriving home, McGraw got busy into his routine and completely forgot about the boyfriend’s visit. As he explained to Fallon:
“We’re doing a barbecue, so I’m in the kitchen, and I forget that he’s coming. I have a white apron on and a knife and I’m trimming meat up, so I’ve got chunks of meat all over this white apron, blood everywhere. The doorbell rings and I go and answer the door, and here’s this kid who’s dating Gracie standing there. I’ve got a knife in my hand and a bloody apron on … It worked out really well!”
Can you imagine your dad greeting your boyfriend at the door covered in blood and holding a knife?! We’re sure it was the perfect intimidation factor for the young man.
However, these parents seem to be pretty big on letting their three daughters learn things on their own. So, even if McGraw hadn’t scared this boyfriend with a knife, the dad probably wouldn’t have gotten in the way of him dating his daughter.
“Sometimes, it’s better to let your children go through things on their own and let them experience it instead of saying, ‘Don’t do it this way, or you must do it this way,'” Hill told New Beauty.
Hill and McGraw certainly know a thing or two about what it takes to make a successful relationship—they’ve been married for 21 years. What’s their secret?
“Well, she tolerates a lot, I think that’s probably the main reason,” McGraw jokingly told “Today.” But Hill followed up with the real root of what helps them maintain a happy marriage: “We do actually like one another.” Plain and simple.
The couple recently collaborated on an album together for the first time in their careers. It’s called “The Rest of Our Life” and is available now on iTunes. Here’s McGraw and Hill performing their song “Break First” together on “The Tonight Show”:
