A Classic Crayola Color Is Retired

Is there anything better than opening a fresh pack of Crayola crayons? We all remember that feeling from childhood, and most of us have our favorite colors too. Well it turns out it’s time to bid farewell to one of those classic colors, because Crayola will be removing one from its classic 24-pack of crayons.

And the color is (drumroll please) … dandelion. Yes, the iconic mustard yellow will be leaving the 24-count crayon box set.

According to WFTS, Crayola originally said it would announce which color would be removed from the box at a live “National Crayon Event” at Times Square on Friday. However, the company tweeted on Thursday that “Dandelion decided to announce his retirement early.”

Watch the video below and prepare to become emotional and nostalgic.

Dandelion is the first color to be removed from the classic 24-pack of crayons in its 100-year history! The other colors in the 24-count box are Red, Yellow, Blue, Brown, Orange, Green, Violet, Black, Carnation Pink, Yellow Orange, Blue Green, Red Violet, Red Orange, Yellow Green, Blue Violet, White, Violet Red, Cerulean, Apricot, Scarlet, Green Yellow, Indigo and Gray.

While Dandelion is the first crayon to be officially retired from the box set, other crayons, like “Mole Blue,” “Psychedelic Purple” and “Light Chrome Green” have been discontinued. Dandelion will be replaced within the 24-pack, but the official replacement color has not yet been released.

However, according to a Facebook Live announcement by Melanie Boulden, senior vice president U.S. and global marketing at Crayola, “The new color will be part of the blue family.” Boulden went on to say, “This summer we are going to invoke our fans to name the new color because we want you all to be a part of Crayola history.” Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait till May for more details.

Goodbye Dandelion, you will be dearly missed!
