Tom Cruise confirms ‘Top Gun 2’ will start filming soon

Paramount Pictures

Do you have the need? The need for speed? Well, get ready, because Tom Cruise just confirmed a “Top Gun” sequel is preparing for take off!

It’s been more than 30 years since Cruise hit the “Danger Zone” (get the Kenny Loggins reference there?) with co-stars Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Kelly McGillis and Anthony Edwards. The original action-packed film brought in more than $356 million worldwide during its 1986 release.

Surprise “Top Gun” Announcement In Australia

Cruise made the bombshell announcement that “Top Gun 2” is in the works during a live appearance on the Australia morning show “Sunrise.”

Cruise sat down with the morning show hosts to promote his upcoming movie “The Mummy.” But the show’s hosts asked the Hollywood superstar about rumors circulating about a “Top Gun” sequel. It almost sounded like a throw-away question, but Cruise shocked them with his response:

“I know. It’s happening. It is definitely happening,” Cruise said. “You’re the first people that I’ve said this to.”

You can hear the shock and delighted surprise in the hosts’ reactions! Of course, it doesn’t hurt when you score a worldwide exclusive story out of the blue, either. Cruise told the “Sunrise” hosts the sequel should start filming “probably in the next year.”

“Sunrise” host Samantha Armytage couldn’t contain her excitement at the news: “You just made my day!” she gushed.

We bet The “Top Gun” news made a lot of people’s days.

“Top Gun” Trends On Twitter

Of course, Twitter users never fully agree on anything. Not everyone shared the same level of excitement about a “Top Gun” sequel.

Some questioned the need for a sequel more than 30 years after the original. Maybe they think the cast is getting a little too old for a high-flying action flick?

Take the classic shirtless beach volleyball scene. One Twitter user imagined what that would like like in the sequel.

Others took a more direct approach with the age jokes.

Others on Twitter took guesses on the possible plot.
