As if the news cycle couldn’t get any sadder after the Las Vegas mass shooting, sources confirmed Monday night that Tom Petty has died.

The legendary musician was reportedly found unconscious at his Malibu home on Sunday night. According to Rolling Stone, EMTs were able to find a pulse and he was rushed to the hospital where it was determined he had suffered a full cardiac arrest. The decision was made to remove life support, however, after doctors were unable to find brain activity.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ manager, Tony Dimitriades, released a statement about the star’s death on Monday and an official statement was also released on Twitter:

“He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

Fellow artists have taken to social media to share their grief and pay tribute to the singer-songwriter, who had just wrapped up a tour with his band, the Heartbreakers, last week. Petty was 66.
