Trevor Noah is paying his crew out of his own money during furlough

Many people across the country have lost their jobs or are working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those in the entertainment industry are no different, and production on most TV shows and movies has either been suspended completely or drastically changed.

With the help of writers, producers and some production staff working at a distance, Trevor Noah is hosting “The Daily Show” from his home. However, 25 of the in-studio crew members on the Comedy Central show — including camera operators, audio technicians, stage management personnel and video operators — are furloughed indefinitely.

That doesn’t mean they’re going without a paycheck during these trying times, however. That’s because Noah is personally paying their salaries with his own money while they’re temporarily unable to perform their jobs. He plans to make sure they get paid for the duration of the furlough, however long that may take.

“These are the people who have been on the show with Trevor from day one and help put on the show,” a source close to the production told Variety. “Trevor is personally covering their salaries until the production business opens again. He respects his crew tremendously and feels it’s only right that they get through this together.”

Now dubbed “The Daily Social Distancing Show With Trevor Noah,” the show that skewers the news and current events to comedic effect will run for 45 minutes in length, up from its usual time slot of 30 minutes. It’s currently rated the No. 1 show in late-night among the demographic of 18-34 year-olds.

Paying his staff during furlough is not the only good deed Noah has done in the wake of the pandemic.

On April 27, he took to Twitter to announce that he would be donating 50 laptops to teachers in need while they are forced to adapt their classrooms to virtual learning:

Noah isn’t the only one in the entertainment industry being a decent employer right now, either. James Corden is reportedly doing the same thing for his crew at “The Late Late Show.” Jimmy Kimmel reportedly paid stagehands for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” personally until ABC returned to the air and Variety points out that crew members at “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” an “Desus & Mero” are also receiving full paychecks.

Kudos to Noah and other celebrity TV personalities for making these difficult times just a little bit easier for those who could use it!
