Infant Triplets Are Among Hurricane Irma’s Littlest Survivors

The damage that Hurricane Irma has inflicted has been unimaginable. One family that nearly lost everything, the UK’s Independent reports, were Brits Kate Jackson and her fiance Alex Ashman. They were living on the British Virgin Island of Tortola when Irma hit in early September. Not only did the couple have to fear for their own safety, but they were terrified for their six-month-old triplet girls, Beatrice, Charlotte and Isabella.

The family of five took shelter at Kate’s mother’s house and were also joined by Kate’s sister and family friends, Nick and Jayne, according to Little Things. As the hurricane raged, the group ended up huddled together in the shower of a newly-constructed bathroom. That room ended up being the only one that withstood the storm.

Each woman in the group held one of the three babies in their arms while the men held a headboard over them to try and offer some semblance of protection. The group feared the worst and even wished each other goodbye.

When the house began to fall down around them, Nick began to desperately look for a way out. That’s when then men kicked out the bathroom window and pulled everyone through it.

“I went over to the door to see if there was a way out to get to a solid concrete generator room,” Nick said. “As I twisted the handle it blew open in my face and I saw that there was no longer a house. It was a slow-motion moment. That was like staring at God,” Nick told Little Things.

The group managed to make it to a neighbor’s house, which was still standing. While Kate and Ashman lost everything they owned and their home was destroyed beyond repair, the entire group survived, including the triplets.

Now a friend of the family has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise money for the family so they can begin to rebuild their lives. People have already donated nearly $8,000 to help the young family get back on their feet.
