An Electric Ford Truck Towed More Than A Million Pounds

Wow!

An all-electric F-150 is coming to the market, and Ford says it can haul more than 1 million pounds.

In a recent video posted to YouTube, the automaker shows off the prototype for the new truck. A group of Ford F-150 owners was invited to watch the prototype make a big haul, towing 10 double-decker train freight cars. Ten!

In the video, Linda Zhang, the chief engineer of F-150s for Ford, greets the drivers and asks if they think Ford can pull it off.

“You seem confident, but I’ll be shocked,” one man says.

“We are gonna do this,” Zhang responds.

When she reveals the truck is an all-electric prototype, the F-150 owners are even more surprised.

“What?” one man says.

“No way!” says another.

Yep, it’s electric. Zhang drives the truck herself, and the video shows the train cars begin to move. The spectators are shocked.

“Listen to the motor,” one truck owner says.

“What motor?” jokes another.

The truck drivers applaud at the end of the ride. But there is more: Ford loads 42 of its F-150s into the freight cars and makes the haul a second time!

Watch the video and see the outcome:

With 1.25 million pounds attached to it, the truck does it again — and the witnesses are impressed.

Ford hasn’t given a date of release for the new vehicle, but Zhang says it will come to consumers in the next few years.

Until now, the max towing capacity for a Ford F-150 has been 13,200 pounds. That’s a 2019 EcoBoost Twin-Turbocharged V6, which is a hefty vehicle.

For comparison’s sake, we looked at some other big trucks on the market today. The all-new Chevrolet Silverado 6500 HD is mighty strong, with the capacity to pull 35,500 pounds.

Meanwhile, the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 can haul up to 12,750 pounds and the 2019 Nissan Titan can tow nearly 10,000 pounds.

In its guide to choosing the best pickups for towing, Autotrader says only drivers who have the heaviest trailers need to look at the numbers — in other words, any pickup can handle what most average people need to tow. Pick the one rated best to suit your needs when you aren’t hauling a trailer if you don’t have the heaviest possible haul.

Happy towing!
