This Airline Wants To Introduce Standing-Room Only Flights
Well, you wanted more legroom ...
Travelers are always asking for more legroom and cheaper flights, right? Well, hold on tight!
A Columbian budget airline, VivaColombia, has decided that the solution might be to introduce standing-room only flights to pack more people onto their planes and pass the savings on to you, the passenger hanging on for dear life during takeoff.
Now, “standing room,” might be a little deceiving. While the airplane would not have the seats you would typically see on an commercial plane, it would still have barstool-type chairs for people to lean on.
“There are people out there right now researching whether you can fly standing up,” VivaColombia’s founder and CEO, William Shaw, told the Miami Herald. “We’re very interested in anything that makes travel less expensive.”
But don’t start doing squats to build up your leg muscles just yet. Due to safety concerns, it is unlikely standing-room only flights are coming any time soon.
“First the airline would have to ask the manufacturer of the aircraft to fit them in, then the manufacturer would have to get those seats approved,” Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Richard Taylor told The Telegraph. “Unless they can make it 100 per cent safe, it won’t be viable.”
And then, of course, there is the question of whether this is something travelers would actually want. Even on shorter flights, standing for an hour could be brutal.
“People have to travel like human beings, Civil Aviation director Alfredo Bocanegra told RCN radio in Colombia. “Anyone who has ridden on public mass transit knows that it’s not the best when you’re standing.”
On a positive note, you would never again have to debate whether or not it is polite to lean your seat back during your flight.
