Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reunited for a ‘Wayne’s World’ Super Bowl promo video

Those who watched Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in “Wayne’s World” when it was first released might be surprised to know that it’s been 29 years since they teamed up as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar for their big-screen debut, following the popularity of skits featuring the characters on “Saturday Night Live.” A lot has changed since 1992, but the inimitable public-access TV show hosts have reunited and it’s as if they’ve never been away.

On Saturday, Myers and Carvey appeared — in full Wayne and Garth costume, of course — in an Uber Eats Super Bowl promo. Re-creating the vibe from their old show, they joked,  “2020 was a great year … NOT!” Then it was onto business: pushing the delivery app for the big game on Super Bowl Sunday.

If you missed it, the teaser video is on the Uber Eats Twitter page with the caption, “Wayne’s World is back for the epic, mega, giant bowl!”

If you’re wondering what the “epic, mega, giant bowl” thing is all about — there’s a reason for that. Legally, Myers and Carvey couldn’t say the words “Super Bowl.” The term is trademarked by the NFL, and any ads that mention the game have to pay top dollar for the privilege.

But the legal loophole was perfect fodder for Wayne and Garth.

“We just wanted to say that we’ll see you soon for the game, which for legal reasons cannot be named,” said Myers as Wayne, while Garth later mentioned the “gigantic bowl.” (Both comedians then agree that the phrasing is “totally legal.”)

Some people on Twitter got on board with the theme, responding to the ad with “Party time!” and “Excellent!” Not to mention a “We’re not worthy” from Church’s Fried Chicken.

“This was awesome!! Glad to see Wayne and Garth back after all these years!! Wish they would do another movie together.. I’d love to see another Wayne’s World movie!!” wrote Twitter user @Graphicsgod.

In fact, it looks like fans can see a bit more of Wayne and Garth. The teaser video was one of two released the same day. The other, a 6-second musical interlude from the basement, was posted to YouTube by UberEats in advance of what will presumably be a pretty fun commercial set to air during the actual Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LV (Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Kansas City Chiefs) airs on CBS at  6:30 p.m. ET on Feb. 7. The Weeknd will perform during the Halftime Show, and poet Amanda Gorman will do a reading during pregame festivities.
