“I Love Lucy” is an American institution. For six years, stars and creators Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz charmed millions of viewers with their humor and marital squabbles. The show was so popular that more people tuned in to view Little Ricky’s birth than Dwight Eisenhower’s presidential inauguration in 1953!

Off-screen, Ball and Arnaz were known for their passionate—sometimes tumultuous—relationship. Married for 20 years, they had two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr.

So what are their children up to nowadays?

Desi Arnaz, Jr.

Desi Arnaz, Jr. is an actor and performer. The 68-year-old and his sister both starred in the “Here’s Lucy” sitcom with his funny mama, which ran from 1968-1974.

Arnaz also owns the Historic Boulder Theatre and helps direct non-profit Boulder City Ballet Company (BCBC). He sadly lost his wife, Amy, in 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

Lucie Arnaz

Lucie Arnaz has also followed in her famous parents’ footsteps and has had a long career as an actress, director and singer.

She starred in several Broadway shows (such as “They’re Playing Our Song”), and she performed and directed a musical, “Babalu — A Tribute to the Music of Desi Arnaz.” She also won an Emmy for Outstanding Informational Special in 1993 for her documentary about her parents, “Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie.” Arnaz has been married to her second husband, Laurence Luckinbill, since 1980.

Lucie Arnaz and her son (Desi Sr.’s grandson), Joseph, released a song they wrote together titled “Music in My Heart” in 2016. Arnaz performed it at a live show in Florida in the fall of 2016 as part of a tribute to her father, who would have turned 100 in March 2017.

Lucie shared the meaning of the song with a Sun Sentinel reporter, saying:

“In the song, he’s asking if his grandfather … knows what he’s doing. ‘Does he know I’m a musician?’ The answer is, from my father, his grandfather, that ‘I am here all the time. I am the music in you, the lyrics. I’m in your heart. Look up, I’m in the sky. I’m the tune in your head when you lie down to bed.’ I put it in the show and in the CD. Singing that every night as a eulogy and a thank you, whatever you want to call it, never gets old. It means a lot.”

I am sure Desi would be honored to know that his children and grandchildren are following in his footsteps and keeping his old favorites like “El Cubanchero” and “Rumba Matumba” alive.
