Whipped hot chocolate is the latest DIY drink trend you’ll want to try

When it comes to fall flavors, some people have a passion for all things pumpkin spice. Others are all about apples, with cider, dumplings and pies. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to go out and pick a bunch of apples with the family on a fall weekend.

Then there is the group of folks (myself included) who eagerly anticipate fall for one thing: hot chocolate! Few things are better than the sweet, rich flavor of a mug of hot cocoa on an autumn day. Or at least, so I thought until I discovered whipped hot chocolate. Until now, the only thing whipped about my hot cocoa was the cream on top. Which, of course, is pretty amazing, too.

But whipped hot chocolate is a next-level drink. I took one look at it on Twitter (thanks, Kate Marie at @ktlynmariesmth!) and had to figure out how to make this beautiful creation.

If you’ve made whipped coffee (also known as dalgona) then you should be familiar with this process. Since I’m a newbie, I thought I’d share what I found out about whipping up a mug of this airy and light hot chocolate.

Like the Starbucks secret drink menu and its dalgona cousin, whipped hot cocoa is also a TikTok phenomenon. And while the basic ingredients are simple (cocoa mix, heavy cream, and milk) how you make it can change depending on your taste. Once you whip up the creamy hot chocolate topping, you can put it on top of a cold glass of regular or chocolate milk or use it as a topping on a warm drink. A dollop with your morning coffee, perhaps?

The whipped hot chocolate recipe from Passion for Savings is super simple. It’s only four steps and in less than five minutes, you’ll be sipping your delicious drink!

TikTok user @isolationbaking showed off a cold version of the viral recipe on her account.

This version, from self_care_club on TikTok, features cocoa powder instead. The recipe is listed in the comments:

You can also warm up your milk or use heated chocolate milk to transform your whipped hot chocolate into a creamy, warm hug in a mug.

Here’s a matcha version from Shay & Steph at @soflofooodie:

Consider adding Nutella or incorporating strawberry milk powder instead of hot chocolate for different flavor profiles without all the caffeine. Or, if you prefer, turn yours into an adult drink by swapping your favorite liquor for the water. Get creative!

I can’t wait to try one as soon as the weather gets that fall chill!
