A look inside John Goodman’s 28-year marriage

In 1987, actor John Goodman was still relatively unknown in Hollywood. He had starred in some TV movies and had small but promising roles in a few comedies, but he wasn’t the household name that he became after landing the role of lovable working-class Dan Conner on “Roseanne.”

However, 1987 was a very important year for the actor. Not only was he working on a juicy role in the new Dennis Quaid football story, “Everybody’s All-American,” it was also the year that he met the beautiful Annabeth Hartzog.

The movie was being filmed in New Orleans, and Hartzog, a Louisiana native, met Goodman at a Halloween party.

She fell quickly for Goodman’s charm, despite their 16-year age difference. (On recalling their meeting, Goodman jokingly says, “I couldn’t figure out why anyone that pretty was talking to me.”)

Goodman and Hartzog wed in November 1989, and for nearly 30 years, the couple has beaten the odds and managed to be a Hollywood “happily ever after” story. Despite Goodman’s well-known struggles with alcohol and food, the couple stayed together and raised their daughter, Molly, who is now 27 years old and works in TV production.

Among other projects, Molly worked as an editor on a comedy short called “A Love Saga with John Goodman.” She was also a crew member on “New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel.

So, what’s Goodman’s secret to a long-lasting relationship? How have he and Annabeth managed to stay married in such a notoriously difficult environment like Hollywood, even when so many personal demons threatened to turn their relationship upside down?

Goodman has said it all comes down to “listening and patience,” and he credits his wife with getting him into a treatment center and helping him find sobriety.

What an inspiring love story — not just for Hollywood couples, but for anyone who has ever struggled with addiction.

Goodman is back on TV, starring alongside his TV wife, Roseanne Barr, in the reboot of “Roseanne,” which premiered in March.

Fans were initially concerned that Goodman wouldn’t be a part of the new show, because he presumably died at the end of the original series. But the producers found a way to write everyone’s favorite blue-collar husband back into the sitcom — and fans as well as Goodman are glad they did!

“It was exactly like we took a week off and came back to it, and the effect was so strange that it was remarkable,” Goodman told Us Weekly. “The first time I went on the set, the hair on my arm stood up because it was like they sucked me right back in.”
