‘Sister Act 3’ is in the works, according to Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg may be back into a habit she hasn’t experienced for many years.

But don’t worry! This habit is part of the nun’s costume she wore playing Sister Mary Clarence in the “Sister Act” movies from the 1990s.

During an appearance on “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” the actress/co-host of ABC’s “The View” said that things are happening behind the scenes to possibly produce “Sister Act 3.”

“We’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back,” Goldberg told Corden.

It’s been almost 27 years since “Sister Act 2” was released in theaters. When asked why it’s taken so long for a third movies to even be considered, Goldberg told Cordon it seemed like the interest wasn’t there.

“Because for a long time they were saying no one wanted to see it,” Goldberg shared. “And then quite recently, it turns out that that may not be true. People might want to see it.”

In the original movie, Goldberg portrayed Deloris Van Cartier, the Las Vegas lounge singer who snitches on her gangster boyfriend and then goes into the witness protection program as a nun named Sister Mary Clarence. In the sequel, her nun friends bring her back to help them run a struggling Catholic high school.

She may not have played the role on film since the early ’90s, but Goldberg has donned the habit since then on stage.

In 2010, Goldberg took on the role of Mother Superior in “Sister Act: The Musical” in London. You may remember the role was originated in the film by Dame Maggie Smith (“Harry Potter” series, “Downton Abbey”).

Goldberg was scheduled to take up her original role of Sister Mary Clarence in another London revival of the stage musical, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the production to reschedule for a later, unknown date.

With so much seriousness in the world right now, the timing may be right for a new installment of the popular movies.

“It’s a really fun movie,” she told Corden. “It’s fun and it feels good. Nobody’s mad. It’s just, like, listen, bad signing, great singing, OK singing, and then nuns. What’s better than that?”
