Why These New Pink Pineapples Are Sweeter Than The Yellow Ones

So pretty—but are they safe to eat?

So, pink pineapples are a thing, and they could be coming to a grocery store near you very soon. Apparently, Dole Monte Fresh and Dole Plantation are growing the genetically modified pineapples in Hawaii and Jamaica, so get ready for a heaping dose of the tropics next time you eat pineapple slices.

The FDA approved the pink pineapples and dubbed them safe for consumption. Not only are these pineapples pink on the outside, but the fruit inside contains the colorful addition as well. How fun!

It turns out we have lycopene, a cancer-preventative phytonutrient, to thank for the fruit’s pink hue. “Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed,” according to the FDA.

What’s more, the new-and-improved pineapples are not only safe to eat, but they’re also reportedly sweeter than just a regular old yellow pineapple.

It’s the lycopene that gives the pink pineapple a sweeter taste. So, you’re getting a fun color and even more sweetness from this new take on the tropical fruit.

And the the oh-so Instagram-worthy pink pineapples contain less of the bromelain enzyme, which can cause that burning sensation in your mouth when you eat pineapples. Nothing not to love about this fruit!

There’s no official word just yet on when these pink pineapples will be available for purchase, but you should definitely keep an eye out for them while shopping for groceries this summer season. Because if they’re growing on Dole plantations, we’re guessing they’ll be ripe and ready to sell in produce aisles in the near future.

These pink fruits will take your pineapple consumption to the next level this summer. Whether you’re serving them up on a fruit platter or using them to add a touch of pretty pink to your pina coladas and smoothies, there’s no way you could go wrong with such a festive fruit!

Pink pineapples are bound to be the most trendy food of the season, and we don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to get our hands on them!
