Studies Show Women Need More Sleep Than Men, So Sleep In Ladies
The reason? Women use more of their actual brain.
Women have busy lives and, all too often, sleep can take a back seat to the many other priorities in life. Unfortunately, this poses a challenge. Because women have more complex brains and do more multitasking, they need about 20 more minutes of sleep than men, says Professor Jim Horne, a sleep expert and director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University.
In a study that examined 210 middle-aged men and women, Duke researchers found that for women, poor sleep is associated with high levels of psychological distress and depression. Edward Suarez, an associate professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and the lead author of the study, says that “In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”
Professor Horne explained to DailyMail that the more you use your brain, the more it needs time to recover. Women tend to do more multitasking and wind up using more of their brains than men. As a result, the need for sleep is greater in women.
So take a deep breath and relax. It’s important for your body and mind.
