You Can Now Book A Stay In A Teepee With Reindeer Herders On Airbnb

Although places like London and Paris will always be at the top of many destination wishlists, if you’re craving a truly unforgettable vacation, you may want to add the world’s most remote Airbnb to your travel goals. Recently added to Airbnb, a teepee in the camp of a nomadic tribe of Mongolian reindeer herders is now the most remote location you can book on the lodging website.

Airbnb reportedly teamed up with what3words, a company that turns complex GPS coordinates for off-the-grid locations into easy-to-find three-word addresses, to offer this unique travel experience. Guests will spend at least two nights and three days with members of the Dukha, a tribe of people that has lived in Mongolia for centuries and that has a strong connection to wild reindeer.

In recent years, the tribe has dwindled to just 40 families, with many members abandoning the harsh winters of northern Mongolia and traditional nomadic culture of the tribe for a more modern lifestyle. With the number of reindeer shrinking as well, the Dukha now reportedly rely on tourism to survive.

So, what will this unusual trip be like? Upon arrival, you will be met by the Dukha and ride horses up a mountain to the teepee camp to settle in and enjoy a cup of reindeer milk tea. During the day, you’ll explore the area with your Dukha hosts, cook simple meals and maybe even ride a reindeer.

At night, you’ll stay in your own traditional Dukha teepee. As the Airbnb listing notes, this is not the type of place that offers high thread-count linens and fancy bathroom soaps. Rather, the teepee is a rustic accommodation with two wooden beds, sleeping bags, and the great outdoors as your bathroom.

However, for those seeking some adventure, this seems like an ideal opportunity to make some fantastic memories and spend time with people whose lives are very different than your own.
