For anyone who has a mushy, over-ripe avocado sitting on their counter right now, there’s hope for you! Avocado lovers know that avocados are delicious, nutritious and incredibly versatile, but the luscious green fruit (yes, fruit!) also has a notoriously short shelf life.
Determining when an avocado is at the peak of ripeness and flavor is often a hit or miss guessing game because the green beauties seem to have a mind of their own. Forget about an avocado for a day or two and it can turn from rock hard to moldy mush before you can say, “Guacamole!”
Welch’s has come up with a game-changing solution: frozen avocados. If you’ve ever tried to freeze avocados yourself, you know it just doesn’t seem to work very well. On their website, Welch’s explains that their avocados are “ripe-frozen” so they’re perfectly ripe right out of the freezer.
Welch’s Frozen Avocados come in 10-ounce and 32-ounce bags and are cut in “hand-chunks” rather than sliced or diced. That means they can be adapted for all of your favorite recipes that call for avocado, whether you dice them for Poke bowls, mash them for guacamole, slice them onto your favorite sandwich or blend them in a smoothie!
Welch’s has not only eliminated the guesswork of determining when an avocado is ripe and ready, but they’ve also resolved that other awful problem with avocados — leftovers that get an unappetizing brownish tint after they’ve been exposed to air. Eight chunks of Welch’s frozen avocado is equal to one whole avocado, so you can use only as much as you need and keep the rest frozen in all their green splendor!
If you’ve never really experimented with avocados beyond your favorite guac recipe, Welch’s also has a bunch of recipes on their website, including Avocado Caprese Salad, Avocado Key Lime Pie and a provocative smoothie called the Crazy Sexy Goddess that includes banana, blueberries, kale and — of course — avocado!
You can find Welch’s Frozen Avocados in grocery stores nationwide and you can check here to locate the store nearest you. Though if you have fresh avocados on hand right now that haven’t ripened yet, you can always try ripening them in the Avocado Sock.
