You can now buy Mardi Gras King Cake Ice Cream
Can’t celebrate the famed celebration of Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year? Well here’s something that might cheer you up: Blue Bell Ice Cream has announced that it will be selling their Mardi Gras Cake Ice Cream flavor nationwide for a limited time.
Normally a regional flavor found only in Louisiana and Alabama, it’s become so popular that the ice cream company decided that it’s time to share it with the rest of the country. At least for a little bit:
The ice cream company has been selling the flavor since 2012; however, after a Louisana-based grocery store posted about the flavor’s arrival on its Facebook page, a huge amount of requests for the flavor from around the country flooded in.
It makes sense, as King Cake is known for its delicious decadence. A sweet, brioche-like, braided cake that’s sometimes filled with fruit spreads and topped with a rich cream cheese frosting and a generous coating of purple, green and gold sugar, people go wild for this seasonal treat.
The release of the flavor comes just in time to celebrate the New Year, a time when, traditionally, King Cake or Mardi Gras season begins. The 2019 Mardi Gras King Cake flavor is the ultimate combination of two previous favorites: the 2004 Mardi Gras and the 2006 King Cake ice creams. While the ice cream will not include the tiny baby Jesus that’s found in King Cakes, it will bring together the delicious flavors of candy sprinkles, a cream cheese frosting swirl and cinnamon ice cream.
If you’re curious as to what King Cake tastes like in its true form, check out blogger Barbara Bakes’ recipe, which uses a quick rise yeast, making it a breeze to make and far less time-consuming than other recipes that make you wait much longer for the dough to rise.
It’s a buttery bread that looks as good as it tastes and is guaranteed to be a hit at any Mardi Gras party.
