Your kids will love this ‘magic potion’ drink that changes color as the ice cubes melt
From Easter egg-dying to outdoor gardening, the spring and summer seasons open up opportunities to create multi-color magic with your kids. The kiddos are bound to become quite parched while playing and crafting, too. So, if you’re looking for the perfect thirst-quencher to match their colorful creations, this is just the recipe you need.
The “magic potion” drink comes from Mrs. Happy Homemaker and can be made by combining lemon-lime soda and Kool-Aid ice cubes. The Mrs. Happy Homemaker blog suggests using three different colors of Kool-Aid to make the drink colorful and fun.
Mix the Kool-Aid according to the package directions and then pour it into ice cube trays. You’ll need a few different colors and flavors of KoolAid. In this photo, she used red, green, and blue, but you can use whichever you prefer.
Once frozen, you can pop the cubes into a cup full of lemon-lime soda. As the ice melts, new colors and flavors will be released into the soda.

Whether you’re planning a picnic or just playing in the backyard, this will be an extra fun way for your kids to cool off. Plus, aside from the wait time for the ice cubes to freeze, the prep is so easy, it requires very little work on your end.
A version from Nest of Posies suggests adding colorful sprinkles to the ice cubes before they’re completely frozen to unleash an added dose of flavor and joy.
Making these require a similar process: Basically, mix brightly colored Kool-Aid and water into ice cube trays and allow to freeze. After that, throw in some sprinkles and refreeze once again.
These sprinkled and colored ice cubes will brighten up any drink, even plain water. And look how adorable they look in drinks served in mason jars with patterned paper straws:
Or, try a recipe that will add some fun to beach vacations, Shark Week celebrations, ocean-themed birthday parties and more throughout the summer season. The shark bite punch from Easy Good Ideas calls for red Kool-Aid to make the ice cubes. But, before you pop them into the freezer, you’ll add a gummy shark to each one.
Then, as the Kool-Aid melts, red “blood” and sharks will be released into the lemon-lime soda “ocean.” How absolutely cool is that?
The website suggests making an adult version of this punch by simply adding a bit of vodka into the mix. Now, that’s something the over-21 crowd can enjoy!
So whether you opt for multiple Kool-Aid colors and flavors, add sprinkles or go with the shark theme, there’s no wrong way to infuse some multi-hued magic to your kids’ drinks.
By the way, if you can’t find Kool-Aid at your local stores, there are plenty of options available on Amazon. You can find a 48-pack of the unsweetened envelope mix on the online site for $14.92:
Don’t forget about the adult version of these beverages, either. Cheers!
