Using the perfect emoji in your message can help you convey your tone and meaning. Because of this, emoji have become more detailed and sophisticated over the years. And the emoji ante will soon be upped once again with the introduction of the Emoji 12.0 set from the Unicode Consortium.
The organization has released 230 new emoji for 2019. The new additions run the gamut from practical to whimsical to silly to downright adorable. They include Flamingo, Otter, Guide Dog, Waffle, Hindu Temple, Sari, Mate and Sloth. Yes, a sloth! How cute will your text to your sweetheart be with the addition of a sleepy sloth?
There are actual 59 new distinct emoji, which becomes 75 when gender variations are added and 230 with all the different skin tone options available. Some additions, like the white heart, users have been requesting for some time. Here’s a peek at what they’ll look like.
Personally, I can’t wait to use the waffle when inviting my friends for brunch, and the skunk may come in handy when warning my husband that he should take extra care to make sure our dog doesn’t get sprayed while out for a walk.
“2019 expands the scope of people that can be represented, including people with various disabilities (proposed by Apple last year), a gender-inclusive couple, as well emojis which permit a mix of skin tones for people holding hands,” reads the announcement from Emojipedia.
As for when you’ll actually be able to start using these new emoji, that might take awhile. When new emoji are released, they usually become available on mobile phones in September or October of that year, according to Unicode. But they do add that some platforms may add them earlier.
