Zac Efron—the young heartthrob who rose to fame after his starring role in the “High School Musical Franchise,” and who then went on to appear in such films as “Neighbors” and “The Greatest Showman”—is very active on Instagram, always posting fun photos and behind-the-scenes peeps that make following him a must for every fan. But his latest pic on the social media site gave some people the chills!

On Wednesday, January 17, the handsome actor posted a picture of himself doing a photo shoot for his latest movie, a biopic about Ted Bundy:

It’s a long-distance, black-and-white shot, but even from far away, you can tell that Efron has not only the hairstyle of Ted Bundy, but that he has also perfected Bundy’s dead-eyed, chillingly charming glare.

Here. Take a look at this side-by-side shot:

For those who don’t know, Ted Bundy was a serial murderer and rapist. Throughout the 1970s, he terrorized young women across several states, and he became one of the most famous serial killers of all time. He is known to have killed at least 36 women, but authorities think it possible that he claimed the lives of many other victims.

Hollywood has long had an obsession with serial killers, and six films have been made about Bundy’s story alone. Filmmakers are likely drawn to this enigmatic subject because Bundy hardly seemed the type to hurt anyone, let alone murder over 30 people. He was a soft-spoken, handsome, “all-American” guy who even served on the Nelson Rockefeller presidential campaign in 1968. He was a smooth dresser, as well as an expert at reading people. He could easily figure out how to get inside people’s minds, thanks in part to his degree in psychology.

With his boyish good looks and unassuming smile, Efron is a shoo-in for the part. In fact, Bundy’s own defense lawyer from the 1970s and ’80s, John Henry Browne, applauded Efron’s casting, saying the comparison was “dead-on.” (Hmm. You would think he could have chosen a better turn of phrase!) Having approval from Browne, one of the people who arguably spent the most time around the serial killer in his later years, is a good sign that Efron is going to do great in this creepy role.

The movie, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” is being directed by Joe Berlinger (who previously produced the unforgettable true-crime doc “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills”). “Extremely Wicked” tells the story of Ted Bundy via the eyes of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (played by Lily Collins). Shooting has only just begun, but if these early photos are any indication, this haunting thriller is going to be a must-see.
