If you’ve purchased any poultry or meat sausage products recently, check your fridge or freezer. R. L. Zeigler Co. is recalling 11,664 pounds of ready-to-eat poultry and meat sausage products because they may contain pieces of metal.

The ready-to-eat red hot chicken and pork sausages were produced on Nov. 29, 2018 and have a use-by date of Jan. 24, 2019. Each package is 24 ounces and contains nine sausage links. Both the red hots and extra hot sausages are involved in the recall.

The recalled products are marked with “EST. P-9156S” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail locations nationwide. The labels will look like this or have an additional sticker that says “extra hot”:

United States Department of Agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, is classifying the recall as Class I, which means “there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of injury or illness due to eating the products. The problem was discovered from consumer complaints.

The sausages were sold at Walmart and other retailers and grocers.

If you have any of these sausages in your fridge or freezer, FSIS says to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. If you consumed the product and are concerned about an injury or illness, you should contact a healthcare provider.

This is the second recall of sausages this month over concerns about metal. Jimmy Dean first recalled 29,000 pounds of frozen ready-to-eat pork and poultry sausage products on Dec. 10 when their customers also contacted them after finding metal in the sausage.

The Jimmy Dean products involved in the recall include 23.4-ounce pouches of Jimmy Dean Heat ‘n Serve Original Sausage links made with pork and turkey with a use-by date of Jan. 31, 2019. The products are dated Aug. 4, 2018, and have lot numbers A638216800 or A638216801. The UPC number on the products is 0-77900-36519-5.
