If you ever spot Anne Hathaway in real life and want to get her attention in a positive way, here’s one way to do it: Call her Annie, not Anne. The 38-year-old Oscar-winning actress recently appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and let the audience in on a secret: She hates her name.

“The only person who calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” she said in a remote interview done from her home. “And so every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”

Here’s her appearance, posted to YouTube by “The Tonight Show.” The late-night host gets into it immediately by asking her if, as a long-time acquaintance, he should call her Anne or Annie.

Hathaway explained that everyone in her personal life calls her by her nickname “Annie,” but she’s been stuck with the name “Anne” since she chose it to be her professional name as a child actress.

“When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial, and I had to get my SAG card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?” she said during the interview. “And I was like, ‘Well, it should be my name. My name’s Anne Hathaway.’ So that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people will call me Anne.”

Hathaway is hardly the only celebrity to use a different or more casual version of their name in their personal life. By all accounts, her “Dark Knight co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt goes by the name “Joe” in his day-to-day interactions, while her “Ocean’s 8” co-star Sandra Bullock is often referred to as “Sandy” by those who know her.

Still, Hathaway is the first celeb that we can think of to request that everyone should just use her nickname, declaring that “Anne” does not fit her.

“The truth is, nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit — I’m an Annie,” Hathaway said. “People call me Miss H, people call me Hath, so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”

OK, Annie Hathaway it is!
