Crimped hair is making a comeback

It’s time to blast your ‘80s playlist and dig out your legwarmers and oversized blazer to embrace the comeback of one of that decade’s biggest hair trends: crimping.

If you’re old enough to remember crimped hair back when Madonna and Cyndi Lauper were doing it, you’ll recall that — like all things ‘80s — bigger was better. But the 2020 crimping revival is a little … less big.

One of the most popular current crimping styles is “Kendall Jenner-esque waves with pin-straight ends,” according to InStyle. To get this look, you simply section off your hair and use your crimping tool on the root, working down to the lower section but leaving the ends straight.

Here’s the style, shown as part of Jenner’s “forest fairy” look on Instagram:

One TikTok tutorial, posted by Hairby_chrissy, has over 103,000 likes and shows just how easy it is to achieve the crimped look.

And if you need more inspiration, Instagram is the place to go, whether you want a more natural look like this one from stylist Maci Hembree…

If you never quite got the hang of using your straightener to curl your hair or other hot styling tools that require any level of skill (or hours of trial and error, glued to online tutorials), you’re probably safe with a crimper. It’s really, really difficult to get this one wrong, because a crimper comes with built-in rods that shape each strand to achieve consistent waves throughout your hair.

Another plus for crimping is that the tool is relatively affordable compared to other hot tools. You can pick one up at the likes of Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target for as little as $19.

A star who’s embraced the crimped look recently is Christina Aguilera. In December, she posted a picture to her Instagram account with a crimped high ponytail.

As you can see, the crimped look is a pretty versatile one. We can’t promise it’ll hide your COVID-19 quarantine roots, but it might distract from them!
