Malibu’s new piña colada in a can is perfect for the beach

Instagram

We’re calling it: 2019 appears to be the summer of canned cocktails and wine.

The boozy beverages make sense — they solve rules about “no glass bottles near the pool” and, in an era of craft cocktails, the pre-mixed drinks require absolutely no bartending experience whatsoever.

So, we were pretty excited to discover that Malibu (yes, the maker of coconut rum with a scent that dials up dreams of an island vacation) has multiple canned cocktails to choose from, including a popular summer staple: piña colada.

Light, creamy and mixed with Caribbean rum, the Malibu Piña Colada pre-mixed cocktail comes in an 8.5-ounce can for easy summer drinking.

Oh, and to answer your question, each can packs 5% alcohol by volume.

Other canned cocktails in Malibu’s summer-all-year lineup include pear, pineapple, cola and fizzy raspberry lemonade.

Up for a rum run?

You can use the “where to buy” tool on Malibu’s website to find stores near you that carry the new canned cocktails.

But if you are a purist and want to flex your bartending skills by crafting your own piña coladas, Malibu also has a recipe online for the Puerto Rico-born cocktail.

Here’s how to make a classic piña colada:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 ounces Malibu rum
  • 2.5 ounces pineapple juice
  • 3/4 ounce coconut cream

Directions: Pour ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake. Strain over a cocktail class with ice. Optional: Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

For bonus bartending points, pluck a leaf from the pineapple crown to garnish your cocktail.

For rum-lovers, Malibu has nearly two dozen more cocktail recipes online, including recipes for bay breezes, mojitos, mango sunrises, banana coladas and a rum rendition of a paloma.

Love the canned cocktail trend? Many of your fave drinks are getting mixed and canned.

For instance, Kahlúa now makes a canned espresso martini.

The drink is a mixture of vodka, Kahlúa coffee liqueur and roasted Arabica coffee, and the can yields a nitro foam once it’s poured, so you get that bar-quality experience at home.

As the Kahlua Twitter account points out, the canned espresso martini is “like a personal bartender inside a chilled can.”

That’s not the only canned cocktail you can enjoy out in the sun this season.

Try picking up some canned Moscow mules for your next trip to the beach or pool!

The Mule 2.0 has natural ginger and lemon-lime flavors, as well as grain-neutral spirits — so the taste is meant to please both gin and vodka fans.

It’s all contained in a convenient can for the next time you’re enjoying the summertime weather and craving a perfectly mixed Moscow mule.

So, do you like piña coladas? Getting caught in the rain? We couldn’t help but ask.
