McDonald’s promises to bring back Szechuan sauce this winter

McDonald’s Szechuan sauce made a brief appearance on menus back in 1998, as part of a promotion of Disney’s “Mulan.” It has since been popularized by an episode of the Adult Swim animated show “Rick and Morty.”

Fans spoke out after hearing Rick’s pleas for McDonald’s to bring back the limited-edition sauce—and McDonald’s listened. They previously hosted a giveaway of the sauce. And then they brought it back on Oct. 7—for one day only—to pair with their new buttermilk crispy chicken tenders.

Well, fans were not pleased with the too-brief reappearance of their favorite nugget sauce, and they took to social media to let McDonald’s know.

Lo and behold, McDonald’s heard their desperate pleas and decided to take action. The company issued a statement on Twitter yesterday, announcing that they will be bringing back the sauce in larger quantities this winter.

But you don’t have to wait until then to start enjoying this sweet, tangy sauce. Luckily, the internet abounds with some great alternatives. Reddit user Xeropoint posted a recipe that you can easily make yourself while you wait for McDonald’s to restock.

The Reddit version calls for garlic, plum sake, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, red pepper flakes and a few other ingredients. Once you’ve got it all mixed together, you’ll have a concoction fit for the most devoted of “Rick and Morty” fans.

YouTuber Binging with Babish gave the Reddit recipe a shot himself, and tried to concoct his own version as well. Take a look at his method for making Szechuan sauce in the video below:

Then, after having the chance to sample McDonald’s Szechuan sauce in real life, Binging with Babish recreated the recipe again.

If you somehow missed the “Rick and Morty” episode that made this sauce practically break the internet, here it is for your viewing pleasure:

If you had the sauce back in ’98, then you likely remember just how good it was, and if you didn’t—well, you’ll have to make some for yourself (or wait until McDonald’s releases more) to see what all of the fuss is about.
