Get ready to experience yet another iconic TV show in a whole new way in 2019. As more and more TV series get a reboot, MTV couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon. The network announced that it’s bringing back two hit shows, “Punk’d” and “Singled Out.”
But, these shows won’t be returning in the form of classic 30-minute episodes of television. Instead, they’ll be packaged into easily digestible 10-minute segments and released on a new mobile media platform, Quibi. It’s an attempt to bring fans of the shows more of what they’ve been missing, while also introducing MTV classics to a new generation of viewers.
“This deal builds on MTV’s strategy of reinventing our iconic shows to reach new audiences on pioneering new platforms like Quibi,” Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, said in a statement, according to E! News. “We are excited to be working with Jeffrey, Doug and the Quibi team to reinvent ‘Punk’d’ and ‘Singled Out’ for a new generation of fans.”
But, just because the segments are shorter than they used to be doesn’t mean that these reboots aren’t offering up something for fans of the originals to love.
For instance, “Punk’d,” which was created by Ashton Kutcher and ran from 2003-2007, featured some of the most elaborate pranks on celebrities, and these 10-minute segments promise to do more of the same. (If you’re keen to watch old episodes of the show, that’s what streaming is for!)
Meanwhile, “Singled Out” fans can expect more of the dating game show they loved in the ’90s, but with even more inclusivity, as contestants will be able to find love regardless of their sexual preference.
So far, there’s no word on whether Kutcher or the original hosts of “Singled Out” — which included Chris Hardwick, Jenny McCarthy and Carmen Electra — will be involved with the reboots.
In many ways, MTV and Quibi see these slightly reimagined reboots as the best of both worlds for old fans and new ones, too.
“For the generation who grew up watching Punk’d and Singled Out on MTV, this represents a long overdue reboot of two well-loved shows,” said Doug Herzog of Quibi said in a statement. “It’s also an opportunity to bring these enduring and classic MTV franchises to a brand new audience on our exciting new platform.”
