An ‘Overboard’ Movie Remake Is Happening And There’s An Interesting Twist

Can you believe it's been 30 years since the original came out?!

Who doesn’t love the classic ’80s film “Overboard”? Not only does it star the talented and gorgeous IRL couple of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, but it was directed by rom-com dynamo Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” “Runaway Bride” and “Princess Diaries”) and written by beloved Hollywood writer Leslie Dixon (“Look Who’s Talking Now,” “Hairspray” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.”)

In fact, Marshall famously stated that he thought “Overboard” was one of the funniest movies he ever made. The movie also earned Hawn an American Comedy Award nomination for Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture (who knew this was a thing?).

It would take a bold crew to tackle a remake of this iconic hit, but that’s exactly what producers at 3Pas Studios intend to do. That’s right. An “Overboard” remake is in the works, folks. It has been—brace yourselves—30 years since the original came out, if you can believe it.

The remake will star Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez, and will be written by Rob Greenberg (producer of “How I Met Your Mother”) and Bob Fisher (writer of “We’re the Millers”). That’s definitely a quality cast and crew.

But here’s an interesting twist: Although the blonde bombshell and comedic powerhouse Faris would be a shoo-in for playing Hawn’s character Joanna, she’s actually going to play a version of Russell’s character, Dean! Yep, another gender twist of a beloved ’80s classic. Much like the remake of “Ghostbusters,” it will be an interesting new take on a well-known film.

Faris will play a hard-working single mom who is desperate for an extra pair of hands when it comes to managing her rambunctious kids. As for the part of Goldie Hawn, the gender-flip version will be played by Eugenio Derbez.

Most Americans might not know Derbez, but he is a Mexican actor and comedian and he was voted the #1 most influential Hispanic male by “Variety” in 2014. Something tells me he is gonna nail this role!

No word yet on a release date, but I imagine it will be a family-friendly rating so that the whole family can enjoy it together, just like with the original!
