Sisqo releases ‘Thong Song’ remix 18 years after original debut

Drop everything, folks: Sisqo is back, and he’s here with a 2017-ready remix of the “Thong Song,” that catchy 1999 tune that dominated playlists everywhere that year.

The new, remixed version is a more upbeat take on the classic, and its a joint effort crafted by Sisqo and JCY, a small Norwegian production team of three. But don’t worry, the “Thong Song” remix still has the same familiar lines and expresses plenty of appreciation for, um, certain body parts, so it won’t sound too new to nostalgic ears.

Explaining his decision to release a fresh take on the classic song, Sisqo made it clear that he had waited quite a long time—18 years, really—before hearing a remix he was into.

“I’ve been asked so many times over the years to make a new version of ‘Thong Song’ and I have declined every time until I heard the new version that JCY did,” Sisqo told Buzzfeed this week. “I thought it was dope and figured maybe it was time to put some new rims on the Bugatti.”

The reboot includes some electronic drops, and the lyrics are sped up at certain points, making the song the perfect nostalgic beat for summer.

If you’d like to be your own judge of how the 2017 version stacks up to the 1999 hit, take a look at the recently released video below. Warning, though: the new music video does contain partial nudity (but hey, if you’re a ‘Thong Song” fan, you probably already knew that).

To compare the new release to the 1999 version, check out Sisqo’s original music video for the nearly 20-year-old song below:

Both versions are instant classics, so don’t be too surprised if you can’t pick a favorite—just relax into the nostalgia and enjoy it. After all, between this “Thong Song” reboot and the recent return of neon plastic accessories, we can almost pretend we’re rewinding back to 2000.

And looks like Sisqo’s with us, given his Throwback Thursday Facebook post from last week!
