What do you go to TikTok for? Maybe you like cute animal videos or the latest trendy dance moves. But the social media platform isn’t just good for time-wasting fun. More and more, content producers are sharing their expertise in a variety of life skills. Food recipes and hacks, such as how to use an air fryer to cook eggs, have taken TikTok by storm. In that vein, a number of sommeliers have started creating content to educate the masses about wine.

A sommelier is a wine professional who has been formally trained in everything having to do with wine, from food pairings to wine service and storage. For most of us, enjoying a glass of wine is as simple as opening the bottle and pouring it into the glass. However, sommeliers have the knowledge and experience to ensure that every sip of wine is meaningful and special, no matter the occasion or meal it accompanies.

Bringing this expertise to the masses can be tricky, though. Sommeliers are often seen as part of a formal dining experience, not the everyday. However, thanks to these TikTok experts, that reputation is changing.

Whether you want to learn about the basics of winemaking and drinking (think: Wine 101), more about wine’s history, or how to best pair a wine with meals, TikTok is becoming a vineyard of knowledge ripe for the picking. We’re raising our glass to for their efforts to take a complicated subject and make it fun for everyone.

These TikTok sommeliers are taking different approaches to sharing their knowledge and passion for wine on the platform. For example, Amanda McCrossin (@Somm_Vivant) has dedicated her platform to the art of the sommelier, to help boost the wine market’s presence on social media. In addition to running her own website, which offers travel guides for various U.S. regions known for their vineyards, she co-hosts a podcast and regularly posts videos educating viewers on all things wine-related.

Whether it’s teaching the difference between a chardonnay and a sauvignon blanc or how to navigate Napa Valley, McCrossin has something for everyone on her TikTok channel.

In this video, for example, she explores which wines go best with burgers (what!) and why:

@somm_vivant I can’t believe my first guess didn’t win!! Obv a very big saturday night for me here in Napa Valley 😆 were you surprised by which wine one?! #wine #winetok #foodandwine #sommelier @Tank Garage Winery @Miner Family Winery ♬ Night Changes – One Direction

Michelle Chen’s clever TikTok handle (@LegallyWined) is a combination of her two passions: law and wine. This attorney has taken her skills as a formally trained master sommelier and created a popular TikTok channel dedicated to the the art. In her videos, Chen offers videos on how to train our palates for different wines (reds vs. whites), how to navigate a restaurant wine list, and even helps wine-lovers to use terminology correctly. Her motto, as noted in her profile, is “making wine unpretentious.”

Do you know the three reasons you should hold a wine glass by the stem? Well, @LegallyWined has the inside scoop!
