This assisted living facility in Ohio is going viral—and for good reason.
The Lantern Of Chagrin Valley facilities (there are three locations in the area) has rooms designed to look like houses on a golf course. Not only is this aesthetically pleasing, but it also helps residents feel more at home.
Compared to your average retirement or assisted living facility, this place looks so much more inviting and calming. The hallway features a ceiling painted like the sky, porches and even porch lights that turn on at night.
As the News-Herald points out, the setup is designed specifically for those with Alzheimer’s disease. The facility looks like a small neighborhood from the 1930s or 1940s, as it may be comforting for patients to be taken back in time.
“Every little thing you see — the wall color, the paint — actually has a therapeutic benefit, a therapeutic value,” CEO and occupational therapist Jean Makesh told the publication.
But the grand purpose of all of this is “to find a way to get these people back home,” Makesh told News-Herald.
While Makesh will be watching to see the effects of the environment on residents, there’s no question it gives some peace of mind to the patients and their families. And that’s just the kind of thing they need.

This nostalgia-inspired community isn’t the only example of how the approach to caring for aging adults is changing. Playgrounds designed specifically for senior citizens are popping up around the country. The equipment in these parks lets seniors get low-impact exercise and work on improving their hand-eye coordination. The best part is that the playgrounds are multi-generational, so grandma and grandpa can have a fun day at the park with their grandkids, while also doing something good for their health.
Adult playgrounds are already popular in Asia and some parts of Europe, and now they’re catching on in the U.S. KaBoom!, one of the companies building the playgrounds for senior citizens, has already put up more than 50.
Here’s a video of seniors in Spain enjoying an adult playground. It will definitely make you smile.
And if you’ve always dreamed of spending your golden years on a perpetual spring break, then you will love this Margaritaville-themed retirement community in Daytona, Florida. The community recently opened nine model homes, and the grounds will also feature a fitness center, indoor lap pool and spa, outdoor resort-style pool, private oceanfront beach club, shopping plaza, grocery store and eateries. (Are you ready to retire yet??)
Latitude Margaritaville, the company operating hat retirement community, is opening another location in Hilton Head, South Carolina. From the looks of the renderings on their website, it seems like it will be just as much fun as the first location!
