This $650 ‘Thought Box’ Will (Supposedly) Help You Tune Things Out

The Form Emporium

For those days when a cup of coffee and some moments of quiet aren’t enough, a British shop is offering a new way to get your head together: The Thought Box.

Hold on to your thinking caps: The Thought Box is a big, black box you can plop on your head to shut out the noise and nonsense of daily life, a kind of reverse of the ostrich-head-in-the-sand maneuver. But without all that messy sand!

It can be yours for the low, low price of £495 — which, at the time of this writing, is about $640. Plus shipping. From the UK. (Getting it to my house in Colorado would cost $90.)

All right, so it does come with a few more bells and whistles: A selection of colored filters to match your mood and a set of earplugs and a helmet installed inside ensures a proper fit.

Also included: A hard wooden stool to perch upon while you contemplate life’s mysteries.

The whole thing fits together snugly, with the box fitting right under the stool, so you don’t have to expend any additional brainpower in deciding how to stow it.

To be fair, The Form Emporium, the website selling the Thought Box, is an interesting little shop that sells unique items from up-and-coming British designers and artisans. Most items are reasonably priced, and the site does have a sense of humor about the Thought Box: “Alone at last!” begins the product description.

Only 10 Thought Boxes were made, so if you’ve got $700 or so that you’re dying to blow, the time is now. (I tried ordering one and the site let me proceed, so I guess that means there are still some available. Great news!)

Or you could go to IKEA, buy some Dröna storage boxes in a few different colors ($3.99 each) and a Frosta stool for $14.99.

Just a thought.
