Tim McGraw And Faith Hill Open Up About What Makes Their 21-Year Marriage Work
Country music superstars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have done the impossible in show business: They have been happily married for 21 years.
Like other celebrities, country singers have often been prone to quickie weddings and even quicker divorces (such as “Don’t Blink” country crooner Kenny Chesney, who was married to Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger for only 4 months, or country icon Lyle Lovett’s short-lived marriage to Julia Roberts).
However, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have proved that love can survive in the country music business, and not only do these two keep the passion alive off stage, but they also work well together on the stage. The couple is in the middle of their Soul2Soul tour, performing all over the globe to sold-out arenas.
Rolling Stone says Hill and McrGraw are “undeniably at their best when collaborating” and that the Soul2Soul tour proves that Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are “still the ultimate country-music power couple,” while Billboard describes the Soul2Soul tour as energetic and sexy, saying “it’s clear that the pair is in love and genuinely enjoys performing together every night.”
So what is the couple’s secret to their undeniable chemistry and connection?
In a recent interview with People, McGraw said it is all about spending quality time together. “Funny, as we get older it’s less about the big gestures and more about just spending the time together at home.”
In fact, the happily married pair (who are also parents of three daughters: Gracie, 21; Maggie, 19; and Audrey, 16) say that they eschew fancy restaurants and over-the-top gestures, preferring instead to focus on quiet pleasures.
“For our 20th wedding anniversary, we stayed home, in our pajamas and watched TV,” McGraw told People. “We loved it.”
Time apart, however, is also important. Hill said they both have separate dressing rooms, so that “We each have our own space to retreat to so we do get time to ourselves.”
But perhaps the true secret to their connection is buried in the lyrics to their latest duet, “Speak to a Girl,” a song that is about treating your partner with respect and valuing kindness over material goods.
In part, the lyrics say:
“She don’t really care how you’re spending your money, it’s all how you treat her
She just want a friend to be there when she opens her eyes in the morning
She wants you to say what you mean and mean everything that you’re saying
‘Cause that’s how you talk to a woman, that’s how you speak to a girl”
In a recent performance, McGraw admonished the guys in the audience to pay close attention to the lyrics, saying “Young men, listen up,” and then adding, “Young ladies, expect it.”
It’s easy to see that this country music marriage has lasted for so long not because of their fame and fortune, but because the couple prioritizes their marriage and their family above all the glitz and glamour.
