Chip and Joanna Gaines Open Up About Parenting A Newborn With An 8-Year Age Gap Between Their Other Kids

Discovery

Chip and Joanna Gaines may not be continuing on with future seasons of “Fixer Upper,” but that doesn’t mean they have plans of slowing down anytime soon. The couple just welcomed their fifth child into the mix — so it’s safe to say they’ve got their hands full.

The latest addition, a baby boy named Crew, joins older brothers and sisters Drake, age 13, Ella, age 11, Duke, age 10, and Emmie, age 8. So, there’s quite an age gap between Crew and his siblings, and 13 years between the oldest and youngest. It’s proving to be an interesting experience for the family.

“We think about things like when Emmie goes off to college this little one will only be 10,” Joanna told People magazine before Crew was born. “It’s just crazy to think how wide that gap is, but Chip just loves hanging out with the kids and it’s just such a sweet thing.”

While the couple’s been open about their fifth pregnancy being a surprise since announcing it back in January, it’s something they’ve welcomed with open arms:

The mom of five recently turned 40, and while she admits she couldn’t have guessed she’d be expecting again at age 40, she’s more than OK with it:

“Forty and pregnant … who would have ever thought that was going to happen? But I’ll take it,” she told People magazine.

Her Instagram photos certainly show how she felt about it:

And since it’s been eight years since she was last pregnant, with Emmie, the experience feels much different this time around:

“Since it’s been over eight years since I was pregnant with Emmie Kay, I joke with my friends that it feels like it’s my first time being pregnant. The best thing about all of this is the excitement that my kids have shown for their new baby brother,” the mom wrote on the Magnolia blog after announcing her pregnancy. “Since I had our first four babies so close to one another, none of them actually remember me being pregnant. They love my growing belly (and boy is it growing), and they cannot wait to meet him.”

This sweet image taken of the Gaines kids as their baby brother was being born captures just how excited they were to have a new member of the family:

And now baby No. 5 is here — two and a half weeks early, so he’s already surprising the family:

They broke tradition with their little one’s name:

He’s also overwhelming all of us with cuteness. Because look at this sweet little guy:

Congratulations to the Gaines family! May they enjoy every minute of raising this newborn with the help of their other four adorable kiddos.
