Hugh Jackman Is Starring In A Broadway Revival Of ‘The Music Man’

Looks like one of our generation’s greatest showmen will be starring in “The Music Man” on Broadway! Hugh Jackman will headline a revival of the beloved musical in his first time back on Broadway for an extended engagement since 2003.

The show will open in October 2020. It is being produced by Scott Rudin, who has produced such Hollywood hits as “The Social Network,” “No Country for Old Men” and “The Truman Show.”

Jackman confirmed the exciting news with this photo on Twitter, featuring a suitcase tagged with the name “Harold Hill” (the protagonist of “The Music Man,” and Jackman’s role).

Watch him rehearse his lines as Harold Hill here:

“The Music Man” first debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show was later turned into a Hollywood musical starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones and Ron Howard. The music, lyrics and libretto were composed by Meredith Wilson.

The story focuses on a sneaky salesman who goes from town to town selling musical instruments and uniforms, only to skip town before providing the goods to the captivated townspeople who are charmed by his slick tongue and charming demeanor.

Jackman is currently completing his global one-man-show, in which he performs hits from many of his famous films and musicals, including “The Greatest Showman.” That 2017 film, about the life of P.T. Barnum, was nominated for an Oscar and three Golden Globes, winning one of the latter for best original song. It is currently the third-highest grossing movie musical of all time.

Jackman, who himself has won Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe awards over his career, is known for being a powerhouse on the screen and stage. His work on Broadway has received critical and commercial acclaim, and he won a Tony in 2004 for his performance in “The Boy from Oz.”

Jackman was also nominated for an Academy Award for his work in 2013’s “Les Misérables.” Should he someday attain that Oscar, Jackman will join the rare club of EGOT winners — which are individuals who have won all of the big four American entertainment awards: an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Only 15 performers have ever achieved this honor, including Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Streisand and Liza Minnelli.
