The paint colors that’ll be trendy in 2018

Most of us are aware that repainting is one of the easiest ways to completely transform a room. And if you’re thinking about freshening up the paint color in your home in the near future, then you might want to first take note of what’s predicted to be trendy in 2018. Because as crazy as it sounds, that’s only five short months away.

When it comes to design trends, color plays a crucial role. Not only does it have a major impact in the overall vibe of a room, but it also sets the tone for everything from the style of furniture we buy to the home decor we choose to decorate with.

Black Flame, Deep Onyx and Black Magic

So it may come as a surprise that for the first time in the company’s history, PPG Paints chose a shade of black for their 2018 color of the year, which is quite the contrast from this year’s PPG color of the year, Violet Verbena.

Yeah, you might be thinking that’s a pretty dark and dismal color to be coating your walls with, but PPG Paints is looking at the color “Black Flame” in a different light.

“Black creates the silence we crave in an information-heavy world, while the Indigo offers possibility and a deep hopefulness,” Senior Color Marketing Manager Dee Schlotter said in a post on the company website.

Schlotter also says that the black-toned paint with a hint of indigo makes for a very versatile paint color.

Some of her suggestions include: on a statement wall, with a matte finish on a ceiling, with high gloss on a naturally-lit staircase, on cabinets, and on interior or exterior doors.

GLIDDEN is another paint brand (also owned by PPG paints, it should be noted) that is predicting the popularity of a dark hue for 2018 with its selected color titled “Deep Onyx.” The company website calls black “the most forgotten neutral” and compares its classic nature to that of a “little black dress.”

That’s quite the switch last year’s GLIDDEN color of the year, which was titled Byzantine Blue.

Olympic Paints is also on board with the black paint trend, as they recently announced their version of the deep hue titled “Black Magic” as the 2018 color of the year.

Not Sold On Black?

If you just aren’t sold on the idea of painting your walls a dark indigo-infused shade of black, Sherwin-Williams is predicting warmer neutral colors paired with charcoal tones will be en vogue in 2018.

This trend is shown in their recently released Sincerity palette, which is part of the company’s 2018 color forecast, and incorporates “sand, complex grays and hazy botanicals.”

Other color combinations that Sherwin-Williams predicts will be all the rage next year include two other cheery palettes.

The company describes its Affinity palette as having “memorable pops of peacock color.”

And Sherwin-Williams’ Connectivity palette is described as “high-tech… pixelated in orange, violets, digital greens and high-def yellow.”

Sherwin-Williams hasn’t yet released its official “color of the year” just yet, so I guess we’ll just have to hold on to last year’s Poised Taupe for a little while longer. Or take advantage of the colors that have already been released and dubbed as the trendiest for 2018.

Other big names in paint like Benjamin Moore have yet to release their 2018 palettes. Benjamin Moore’s color of 2017 was a deep, inky eggplant called Shadow. We’ll have to wait and see if their 2018 color stays in the deep, dark neutrals or goes in a completely different direction.

What do you think: Would you consider using this trendy black paint color in your home?
