Valentine’s Day is almost here, and that means the return of a classic candy we only see this time of year: Sweethearts! This year, however, there will be some different versions of the candy with new sayings inspired by love songs.

The beloved, heart-shaped candies will still be available with more than two dozen classic sayings like “Be Mine” and “Hug Me,” but the Valentine’s Day favorite will now include 21 new sayings inspired by love songs spanning seven decades, from the 1950s to today.

The new sayings include “At Last,” “Sugar Sugar,” “I’m Yours,” “Luvme Tendr,” “Crazy NLuv” and other titles, bringing about some nostalgia for every generation.

“Opening or exchanging a box of Sweethearts uniquely encourages connection in a way that sparks feelings of cheer, happiness and nostalgia,” Diana Eschhofen, Spangler Candy’s director of corporate communications, said in a press release. “With this in mind, we came up with the idea to create sayings inspired by our favorite heart-themed songs over the decades, because what better way to bring a smile to someone’s face than being reminded of a melody.”

You can find the candy hearts with the usual sayings or the new song-inspired ones in single boxes or in five-count packs at major grocery and drug stores nationwide. The candies feature the original colors and flavors including wintergreen, orange, lemon, blue raspberry, banana, grape and cherry.

While Sweethearts have been around since 1902 (but were created way back in the 1860s!), you might remember that they almost became just a memory a few years ago after the Necco candy company shut down operations.

Luckily, Sweethearts were then acquired by Spangler Candy in 2018, saving the candy, along with some other classics like Necco Wafers, Mary Janes and Clark Bars.

These new sayings are not the first time Sweethearts got an upgrade. The phrase “Fax Me,” was added in the early ’90s, and now other sayings include “Call Me” and even “Text Me”.

Are Sweethearts one of your favorite Valentine’s Day candies?
